From Glass Bangles to Financial Independence
For generations, Kusum’s family worked in the extreme heat of the glass bangle factories in Firozabad, earning barely enough to secure two meals a day. When her husband fell ill, the burden fell entirely on her.
Through Empower India’s Project Swavalamban, Kusum joined a local Self-Help Group (Mahila Mandal). We provided her with a free sewing machine and 3 months of rigorous tailoring training. Today, she leads a group of 15 women who stitch school uniforms for 4 surrounding villages.
“I used to burn my hands daily for 150 rupees. Today, I am a businesswoman. My daughter goes to school in a uniform stitched by her own mother. Empower India didn’t give me charity; they gave me my dignity back.”
